My Favorite CD
It’s spring! I started writing this tweet thinking it was spring, but before I could finish, it turned into the rainy season… It’s a bit out of season, but I still want to introduce music that makes you want to listen to it in spring! Let’s start with a song by these guys that takes you somewhere else from the moment the sound is heard.
“La Mer” – France’s Hot Club Quintet (Django Reinhardt & Stéphane Grappelli)
From the first note, it really feels like you’re taken to a café outdoors in Paris. Stéphane Grappelli’s violin is perfect for any season, but it truly captures the feeling of enjoying a gentle spring breeze outdoors. Here are a few of Stéphane’s performances
“Them There Eyes” – Oscar Peterson & Stéphane Grappelli
“Little Peace in C for U” – Michel Petrucciani & Stéphane Grappelli
I also feel the spring vitality in Michel’s piano. Michel himself had a challenging life with significant disabilities, but I truly believe his piano continues to inspire and energize many people. Unfortunately, I’ve never had the chance to see his live performance, but I would have loved to experience his music in a live performance.
This timeless masterpiece by Ella and Louis is on repeat throughout the year, but it’s especially enjoyable during a leisurely spring afternoon with a gentle breeze (although I might be sneezing a lot). Having a beer while listening to it has become a classic way of enjoying it among many other listening experiences.
“Cheek to Cheek” – Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong
Lastly, this person. Perhaps it’s because Joni’s early music strongly evokes the sense of Laurel Canyon in the outskirts of Los Angeles, but it makes me feel the hills, the greenery, and the passing breeze—something that doesn’t belong to winter, summer, or autumn but rather feels like early spring. I’ve never been to Laurel Canyon; I’ve only seen it in movies, so it might be my own imagination. From this album that I’ve listened to countless times:
“Carey” – Joni Mitchell And James Taylor
As always, I’ll end with one of my own songs. I’ve written many spring-like songs, so I’ll share a lot!
